ABOUT THE EXHIBIT

Textile traditions have long carried stories of identity, memory, hope and conviction. This group of women, known as Resist-Stitch, uses the enduring language of needle and thread to celebrate democracy, express hope, and respond thoughtfully to the times in which we are living.

Using this familiar medium, they stitch their love of country and hope for a better future. They embrace the threads of their history, the patchwork of peoples, and how their vast landscape was sewn together by shared American virtues and values. The group feels quiet stitches speak loudly about justice, equality, truth, and compassion while gently challenging the stories that can divide us.

Viewers are challenged to look closely and appreciate the artistry as they reflect on how even a small community can practice the ideals we cherish – listening, questioning, and working together – one stitch at a time.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Resist-Stitch is Pat Armstrong, Jan Burleson, Diana Ferguson, Geri Forkner, Lizz Harris, Kathryn L. Hunter, and Ellen Kimball.

The formation of our group began as a kernel of an idea by one member to create a series of panels that espoused the idea that our freedoms were precious and were at risk.

She invited several friends, who share similar interests and skills, and were similarly concerned. The artists meet fairly regularly to stitch, discuss current affairs, and catch up on local news. Their hope is that their work inspires others to re-imagine a future in which the wise words of our founding documents are honored.
