RECEPTION for Out of the Blue
An exhibit by Reagan Schmissrauter
EXHIBIT DATES
November6 - December 11, 2026
ABOUT THE EXHIBIT
A cool blue runs through each of these pieces painted during the summer of 2026.
En plein air is an adventure -- in a field, beside a creek, on a mountaintop -- but that wasn't practical in the sweltering dog days.
The scenes, close to home or far away, simply appealed to my senses, and it turns out this planet is mostly blue.
So I brought it all inside. Each of these was painted with the joy of the great outdoors in a climate-controlled studio.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
A Chattanooga native, Reagan Schmissrauter was inspired to become an artist by his late grandmother Virginia Milam Schmissrauter.
As a young man he apprenticed under Daud Akhriev, a Russian master. He studied with Akhriev in his Chattanooga studio and in the fields of Tuscany. At Baylor School, Reagan studied under Betsy Carmichael and Laura Willet, as well as the internationally renowned portrait artist Joy Thomas.
At 19 he attended Lyme Academy College of Fine Art in Connecticut where he expanded his studies.
Following college, Reagan traveled the country to broaden his horizons. During this time, he studied with British artist Paul Abbott. He also was mentored by visionary artist Rachel Houseman while working in her Eye on the Mountain Art Gallery in Arizona.
Now back in Chattanooga, Reagan paints full-time, mentored by Ann Jackson. While creating a body of work, he accepts commissioned work and teaches adult students.
