Our Origins

In 1979, a few community members met in a living room to brainstorm “an exciting new face of life” for Athens brought about by the arts and, a few months later, wrote the charter for the Athens Area Council for the Arts.

Starting in a closet office on Tennessee Wesleyan College campus, AACA grew to be a premiere performing arts presenting organization in our region. As our organization expanded, and moved to an office in the historic Robert E. Lee Hotel in Downtown Athens, we developed a strong arts in education program, children’s programming, the long-running “Arts in the Park,” and continued to present performing arts series.

In 2005, AACA moved into “The Arts Center,” our home which has grown to be the arts & cultural hub of our region.
