The purpose of the Athens Area Children’s Choir is to teach and encourage children to achieve high artistic standards through choral singing and performance. Life skills such as discipline, responsibility, and teamwork are of equal importance. High expectations will be placed on this select group. Members will attend regular Monday 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm rehearsals beginning September 19.
A $50 registration fee and monthly fee of $50 will be required from each participant. Financial assistance is available from the Marian Biddle Trew Scholarship Fund.
Athens Area Children’s Choir is directed by local musician Karen Malone and assisted by Ellen Kimball, AACA Executive Director Emeritus, who also serves as accompanist. The choir is under the umbrella of the Athens Area Council for the Arts and will be supported by a steering committee. Parents are invited to serve on this committee.
Karen Malone is Music Director at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church and a private piano instructor. She has over 30 years experience in music education and holds a BA in Music Education from St. Leo University, a Masters in Music Education from Florida State University, and has completed doctorate coursework at the University of Southern California.
Fall 2016 Auditions for Athens Area Children’s Choir (AACC) are Sunday September 11 at 2:00pm and Monday September 12 at 5:00pm AACC is auditioning singers in grades 4-9 to fill available spots in the ensemble.
The current ensemble debuts Thursday September 8 when Athens Area Children’s Choir is the featured performer with PBS Sensation Annie Moses Band, which opens AACA’s 2016-2017 Big Time/Small Town Performance Season.
Advance registration is not required to audition, though interested singers are encouraged to call The Arts Center to sign up for an audition date. Those auditioning should come prepared to sing a song (please bring sheet music, an accompaniment CD or iPod, or be ready to sing a cappella). Interested singers unable to attend any auditions should contact AACA to arrange an audition.
The rehearsal and performance season of AACC is September – May. Performances planned for Fall 2016 include Pumpkintown, Old-Fashioned Downtown Christmas, and the matinee performance of Christmas and all of that Jazz, The Arts Center’s popular holiday performance. A full-length show will conclude the choir year in Spring 2017.
