Sadie Delany played by Cynthia McCowan
Bessie Delany played by Marlene Prater, EdD
The three-act play is a powerful and honest oral history of two trailblazing women of color: Sadie and Bessie Delany. The unmarried sisters ages 101 and 103, who live together, are preparing a birthday meal to remember their late father. They welcome the audience as guests to their front porch and begin sharing stories of their childhood, youth, and adulthood.
The sisters, whose father was born into slavery, lived through the Jim Crow Era, the Harlem Renaissance, and were among the first to integrate the New York City suburb of Mount Vernon. As they reflect on their history they discuss everything from black identity to their yoga exercises all the while weaving a tale that is poignant, honest, and true.
Reflecting on the Delany sister’s message, actress Cynthia McCowan commented, “Their experience is amazingly relevant today and helps us raise the questions: where do I stand? What do I deserve? What am I willing to fight for?”
