The creation of artworks inspired by a set-up of inanimate objects is a tradition that harkens back to the earliest days of man-made art. Art instructors have used the still life as a way to introduce students to the basic concepts of drawing and painting for centuries. The tradition remains fresh and relevant as each succeeding generation seeks new interpretations of the form. AACA’s “The Art of Still Life” juried competition and exhibit continues this search by asking regional artists to offer their unique visions based on this theme. Will this show feature paintings of flower
arrangements? Will we see lively compositions of household knick knacks and Native American treasures? Will artists submit works that transcend conventional interpretations? All of these and more, we hope. Artists: Consider the still life, in the traditional sense and in a more interpretive context. Then, create your piece in response to the meaning you assign to the words: Still Life.
